Assistance Dogs International (ADI) knows that assistance dogs have the remarkable ability to improve the quality of life, provide greater independence, reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, improve our mood and bring us unconditional love.

That’s why, with the help of a new $59,500 grant from PetSmart Charities, the organization is aiming to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities with our Accreditation program that ensures assistance dog organizations train and place high quality assistance dogs.

With this grant, Assistance Dogs International will conduct accreditation/re-accreditation surveys of assistance dog organizations, build capacity of the accreditation assessors with an educational workshop, and allow ADI to develop a structured program that will assist candidate programs with further education, training and assessment towards accreditation.

“ADI Accredited assistance dog member organizations helps ensure Individuals with disabilities who are seeking a partnership with an assistance dog that they will receive exceptional service, high quality training and support for the lifetime support of their assistance dog.” said Chris Diefenthaler, Administrator, Assistance Dogs International.

“Pets provide us unconditional love, but for many people, pets also provide critical mental and physical support,” said Jenny Aho, regional relationship manager at PetSmart Charities. “With the support of our generous donors, this grant will ensure over 70 organizations can continue to provide highly-trained service dogs, and place them in loving homes of individuals who are working to live a more independent lifestyle.”

Last year alone, PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America, granted more than $1.8 million to support programs aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals through greater access to service animals and animal-assisted therapy programs. Funding from PetSmart Charities supports best practices that enhance the human-animal bond and find forever homes and families for pets in need. For more information, visit PetSmart Charities' logo
