Erasmus+ Collaboration

Two ADI members - With Dogs for a Smile Foundation (WDSF) from Hungary and Os’Mose from Belgium - just completed a successful two-year collaboration through the Erasmus+ programme.  The collaboration focused on professional development, educational outreach, and raising awareness about the many ways assistance dogs support people with disabilities.

Junior Trainers: Involving Youth in Assistance Dog Training Programs

To create more meaningful human-dog partnerships, many organizations rely on volunteer puppy raisers, handlers in prison, and staff and volunteer trainers to raise and train their assistance dogs. Some organizations have expanded their programs further by launching youth and student trainer programs, which offer a mutually beneficial way to help more assistance dog prospects succeed and young people to develop important personal and professional skills.

Assistance Dogs International (ADI) and the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF) recently published a global survey entitled Paws for Access Report on Assistance Dog Rights. The survey aimed to uncover a global perspective on the challenges faced by assistance dog handlers in accessing the community. The results of this report are clear: there are widespread challenges for handlers and their assistance dogs accessing public spaces, despite many countries having laws to protect their rights.

The role of facility dogs has expanded beyond traditional areas to accompany people throughout their judicial journey.
